Travel in a changing world - a brief summary from the chapter on New Zealand

From Banks Peninsula to Lake Tekapo in scenic countryside with views over the Alps including Mt Cook over shimmering pale blue waters of Lake Pukai on the way to Twizel. Back towards the coast at Oamaru where there are many impressive old sandstone buildings and on to Dunedin. The main sights to see here are the botanical gardens which include large areas of natural bushland, the impressive railway station, museums, the Speights brewery and the nearby Otago peninsula where I saw albatross and yellow eyed penguins. The countryside between Dunedin and Te Anau is picturesque and a swim in the lake at Manapouri and short bushwalks in the area from which cruises go to Doubtful Sound was also a highlight. The weather changed and instead of a cruise of Milford Sound in perfect weather as I had done in the past, I saw waterfalls cascade down the mountains and the impressive Chasm – a 22 metre ravine swollen and churning like a washing machine out of control because of that days’ heavy rain. The weather picked up and I enjoyed another perfect day at Queenstown and went of the TSS Earnshaw steam boat cruise all around the lake. It continued fine at Wanaka (another swim in the lake there), Arrowtown, Hamner Springs, Greymouth ( yes it was grey and drizzly there, so it lived up to its name), nice weather through Murchison to Motueka, Able Tasman peninsula and across to Nelson and Picton where I went on a Mail Boat run cruise in perfect weather of Queens Charlotte Sound.

In December 2007, I sold my house on the Gold Coast and travelled around most of eastern Australia, meeting people and collecting last minute material for my book “Travelling in a changing world” which has had an appraisal by Gold Coast Writers group of which I was a member, on its first draft. This gave me excellent advice on how to do the second draft to make it saleable and capture an audience. It was published in 2010 and consists of 650 pages of fascinating descriptions sourced from the travel diaries with the travel information updated.

Published in two separate books – Volumes 1 to 4 contain descriptions and photos taken from the earlier travels experiences which are now of significant historical importance. Volumes 5 to 8 are mainly or travel from the last twenty years up to 2010 and record changes in lifestyle, land use and the environment in places revisited two or three decades later.

Gerard Castles has also published recently a smaller book titled “Lifestyle Renewal and Healthy Living” which sold well as an ebook from 2002 to 2005. It was updated in 2010 and like the book “Travel in a changing world” is available either as an ebook or in printed form from www.lifestylerenewal.com The National Library of Australia and Queensland State library contain copies of both books. Gerard’s interest in land use, architecture, art, people, farming, music and gardening are reflected in these books.
